Eric Stoltz: ‘I felt really great after I lost my mobile phone’
Jan 14th
What’s your favourite piece of technology, and how has it improved your life?
TV-B-Gone. It’s a wonderful little device that has one button – which, when pressed, will turn off any television within 15 metres. It’s ideal when you’re sitting in an empty pub and a television is blaring adverts too loudly. A simple device that brings peace.
When was the last time you used it, and what for?
Last week. To turn off a TV.
What additional features would you add if you could?
It would be nice if the company expanded their repertoire a bit. “People-who-speak-on-cellphones-in-shops-B-Gone” would be swell. Not to mention “Taxes-B-Gone”.
Do you think it will be obsolete in 10 years’ time?
No.
What always frustrates you about technology in general?
All that damned convenience.
Is there any particular piece of technology that you have owned and hated?
I have a love/hate relationship with just about all technology in my life. My first typewriter in particular. I had a helluva time putting new ribbon on it.
If you had one tip about getting the best out of new technology, what would it be?
Wait until the next version comes out – the price drops, and they usually work out some of the kinks.
Do you consider yourself to be a luddite or a nerd?
Both, at various times in my life. Recently I was directing an episode of Glee and I lost my cellphone – and I didn’t have time to buy a new one for three weeks. Well, the first few days I was anxious as hell, suffered the delirium tremens, didn’t think I could make it through, etc. Then something kind of curious happened – I began to feel great. REALLY great. Completely untethered, almost giddy. I hadn’t had that feeling since I learned to ride a bike when I was a kid – it was fantastic. Later that week, my Twitter account suddenly and inexplicably erased all of my incredibly interesting posts. I took this as a sign, and decided to leave the luddites behind and rejoin the modern age once more. But I’m still thoughtful about the whole experience.
What’s the most expensive piece of technology you’ve ever owned?
Either my car or my piano, they were both pretty pricey.
Mac or PC, and why?
Mac. I’ve been on them for 13 years and never had a virus.
Do you still buy physical media such as CDs and DVDs, or do you download? What was your last purchase?
I do still buy them, although it’s silly. A DVD store near me went out of business last year, so I scooped up a lot of older and foreign films. CDs not so much, I download those. My last purchase was You’re Not Listening, by the Rescues.
Robot butlers – a good idea or not?
Let’s not kid ourselves here, robots already run most of our world. We’ll be their butlers soon enough.
What piece of technology would you most like to own?
The emerging nanotechnology that’s able to deliver treatment to (and trigger the death of) the malignant cancer cells in your body while leaving the healthy cells untouched.

Mobile phones tough enough for the great outdoors
Dec 12th
Stuttgart – Mobile phone users looking for a device that can tolerate sport, dust, heat, cold or a soaking in water don’t have to look very far. Many manufacturers now offer a variety of outdoor mobile phones, and even normal devices don’t really need to be protectively cocooned any more.
Many mobile phone users want their devices to look stylish and smart. But for others, the deciding factor is the phone’s robustness and durability under tough conditions.
Leisure cyclists, runners and skiers who love outdoor activities are an ever-increasing market for mobile phone manufacturers. So too are people who work on building sites and in workshops and forests.
‘There is no generic definition for an outdoor mobile phone,’ says Markus Eckstein of Connect magazine. ‘The most simple ones are water and shock resistant.’
People shouldn’t underestimate the level of wear and tear even a normal phone can tolerate. ‘Most phones can survive a knock in the pocket or a fall from a table without a problem. A few drops of rain generally doesn’t affect them either,’ says Eckstein.
However, if it seems likely that in the course of its life a phone will be completely submerged in water or endure high levels of dirt and grime, then it might be better to invest in a certified outdoor mobile phone.
A lot of phone makers often advertise that their brand has a specific IP certificate. IP stands for ‘Ingress Protection’ and the system is used to specify the environmental protection of enclosures around electronic equipment.
The IP number is composed of two numbers, the first referring to the protection against solid objects and the second against liquids. The higher the number, the better the protection.
With the B2710 X-treme, which is available from around 120 euros (160 dollars), Samsung has delivered its first outdoor mobile phone which has an IP67 certification and can withstand being dropped in a bowl of soup or a glass of beer.
‘It will function fine afterwards,’ explains company spokeswoman Annika Karstadt.
The IP67 certification means the handset is completely dustproof and waterproof for a depth of up to one metre for 30 minutes. In addition to that it is also shock and drop resistant. All of its ports are hidden under waterproof panels.
The phone also has an improved loudspeaker for those working in loud environments so background noise can also be filtered out. Sporting types will make use of the handset’s GPS and compass functions, as well as the in-built flashlight.
The Nokia 3720 comes with a price tag of 115 euros and looks like a classic mobile phone. The handset has an IP54 certification. Motorola’s more expensive Defy smartphone costs 320 euros and has an impressive IP67 rating. This phone weighs 118 grams, has a 3.7-inch touchscreen, GPS, WiFi, as well as position, light and proximity sensors.
In contrast, the outdoor devices on offer from Sonim are more modest affairs with their clearly visible rubber casings. The US company’s range of phones are primarily designed for easy use under difficult working conditions, says Sonim spokesman Marius Dittert.
The phones have double casing, ensuring extreme durability, as well as a long-life battery. The certifications range from IP54, to IP57 and IP67. The phones cost between 200 and 300 euros.
Windows Phone 7: the next great smartphone OS
Oct 21st
In recent years the mobile phone space has been upended with the rise of Android and iOS smartphone operating systems. But the arrival this month of Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 and Nokia’s Symbian-based N8 make the battle for mobile computing a four horse race.
If we look at how the new generation of smartphone operating systems are distributed to consumers, Apple’s iOS remains the odd one out simply because it remains tied to the iPhone (and iPad) hardware.
Android, Symbian and Windows Phone 7 (and presumable subsequent versions) are all “open” in the sense that they are available for handset makers to “OEM” the operating system with their devices.
Of these three Android has seen the most success as it started as the operating system of choice for the Open Handset Alliance, not just Google. The OHA now claims 78 tech and mobile companies in its ranks.
Some commentators have said Windows Phone 7 is late to the party (for Microsoft), and to some extent that is true, but let’s not forget Microsoft was actually a pioneer in smartphone operating system development.
The former Windows Mobile commanded a healthy share of the smartphone market before being swiftly overtaken by Android, the iPhone and RIM’s BlackBerry in the business market.
HTC, one of Microsoft’s closest phone OEMs, used to ship Windows Mobile quite fervently before aggressively turning its attention to Android. With Phone 7 now available, HTC is a launch partner so the good relationship lives on.
Make no mistake about Microsoft’s intentions with Phone 7. It knows it missed the start of the rich mobile computing experience revolution, but it also knows how to compete in the operating system space.
Microsoft wants Phone 7 to be the next Android and it will cozy up to the OEMs to make that happen.
It’s too early to say Phone 7 has “missed the boat” or can’t compete with the Android-iOS juggernaut.
As I’ve discussed on my TechWorld blog, Windows Phone 7 has a lot of catching up to do, but Microsoft is what it is today because of its operating system delivery model.
Others have said the success of Phone 7 will depend on the applications available. Given the success of iOS and Android has been largely due to their respective this is true, but again, it’s Microsoft we’re talking about here.
There no reason why Microsoft’s ISV network and app development skills can’t be successfully applied to its new generation mobile OS.
The Marketplace app store is already available and back in August Microsoft announced a series of Xbox live games for Windows Phone 7. Enough said?
And then there’s Symbian. Symbian is still well ahead of the others in terms of handset numbers but its growth has been lacklustre compared with iOS and Android.
See this smartphone sales buy operating system graphic for a good representation of Gartner’s numbers.
Nokia has tried hard to free Symbian from the shackles of an OEM-only mobile operating system to an open source platform that, like Android, can be used by any vendor.
The biggest problem for Nokia is this strategy hasn’t taken off as it would have hoped.
The new N8 is this year’s flagship Symbian device and it will be fighting hard to main the operating system’s relevance. Sure there are enough Symbian devices already out there, but the more modern, “smarter” versions of Symbian are competing in a whole new ball game now.
Add to this Nokia’s MeeGo strategy and one can’t help but wonder if Symbian will continue to be the company’s smartphone operating system of choice for its future devices.
With one new beginner and two rising stars, the consumer smartphone operating system market looks more vibrant than ever.
Microsoft, with its arsenal of ISVs, alliances and infrastructure is set to re-enter the smartphone market in a big way with Windows Phone 7. Only this time it will face fiercer competition than it ever did on the desktop.
