HTC announces US-only Evo 3D handset
Mar 22nd
HTC has launched its first mobile phone with a 3D screen, using the same glasses-less, auto-stereoscopic technology featured on the Nintendo 3DS console.
The HTC Evo 3D, which is a US-only release and likely to remain that way, enables 3D movies, 3D games and the ability to capture and view 3D pictures and video in HD.
The Evo 3D looks like somewhat of a super-phone with 4.3-inch, 960×540 screen that’s almost as detailed as the iPhone 4′s Retina Screen, a dual-core Snapdragon 1.2GHz processor and Android 2.3 Gingerbread.
4G too? Yep
The Evo 3D will run on the Sprint Network’s 4G WiMax network, for super-fast mobile broadband and will house a whopping 1730mAh battery to keep things going underneath the hood.
There’s also dual five-megapixel cameras that can shoot 720p 3D video and 1080p 2D video.
Like the 3DS, users can turn the 3D-effect on and off with a switch, or move the content to a 3D ready TV using a HDMI cable.
The device, due out this summer, is part of the continuing Sprint-HTC hook-up and is unlikely to make it to the UK, but we’d be hopeful of seeing the same 3D tech housed in a future release.

Review: HTC Inspire 4G
Mar 13th
Every major cell phone company in the country is either offering next generation 4G connections or working feverishly toward doing so.
That means that current generation 3G phones will become increasingly obsolete. Consumers hoping to keep up will have to get a phone capable of running on the upgraded networks.
AT&T customers who want to be ready for the hyper jump in speed should take a good look at the HTC Inspire 4G.
HTC Inspire 4G
The phone was released for AT&T customers earlier this year. It currently costs $99 with a two-year agreement. AT&T temporarily provided azcentral.com with a review unit. These are the highlights.
The design
The Inspire is a well-designed phone. The display screen stands at 4.3 inches with a super LCD display. The size of the screen does two things. First, it gives you a little more space to view stuff than most phones will.
It also makes the phone a little bigger than others, which I can appreciate because of my meat claws for hands. My favorite part of the design is the back of it. It’s a black-colored hard case that gives the phone both a study and elegant feel. The phone looks and feels great.
The software
The Inspire runs on the Android 2.2 platform, fitted with the newly redesigned HTC Sense skin. What Sense does is offer you some very powerful ways to customize the Android experience.
You have several options for using widgets and applications directly on one of the phone’s seven home screens. I quickly slapped the Friend Stream app on one screen to keep a running feed of my social media accounts; configured the mail app to display the last several emails from my Gmail account; and opted to load the photo album on to my last available screen.
Sense takes customization a little further by offering five different skins, and six different “scenes” to change the appearance of the software.
The skins change the phone’s wallpaper, and the scenes give you ways to preload applications and change them out at will.
All these capabilities add up to what the Android platform is making its name on. You will be able to give the Inspire any number of customized feels.
The camera
One of my most favorite things to do with these smartphones is to test the camera. Several of the ones currently on the market offer impressive stats. Not all have a camera that can get a good shot regardless of the setting.
With the Inspire, you’ll have an 8 megapixel camera with now-standard duel LED flash. It can also capture full 720 HD video. But how does it perform? After taking a handful of photos, I can say that this camera does the job.
The new version of Sense brings a faster and more powerful camera. It has built-in affects that you would normally have to use applications for, and a pretty deep set of settings options. It’s simply a very good camera phone.
The specs
The Inspire has a 1 GHz Snapdragon processor with 4GB internal memory with the option to expand via a memory card. The phone supports all major forms of email, Bluetooth and is 802.11b/g/n compatible.
One major concern
Perhaps the biggest selling point of the HTC Inspire 4G is what that combination of four and G is. It means that the phone is compatible with what will be the new standard of mobile connectivity on cell phones.
The problem is that AT&T doesn’t yet office 4G. Company officials announced a speeding up of their 4G plans and have made it clear they plan to keep up, if not lead, the nationwide movement.
But HTC Inspire users will have to decide if now is the time to get a 4G phone knowing there’s no official date for when that 4G connection will kick in.
Overall
Putting the 4G issues aside, the HTC Inspire is a great smartphone. It has a great design. It runs an infinitely customizable version of the popular Android platform. It has a quality camera that can handle video and still shots with equal expertise.

HTC sued over their Facebook phone, ChaCha

HTC sued over their Facebook phone, ChaCha
Posted by Devina Divecha on Sat 26 Feb 2011
HTC faces a lawsuit over their Facebook phone, the HTC ChaCha
HTC revealed its Facebook phone, the HTC ChaCha only recently, but a lawsuit has been filed against HTC by questions and answers service, ChaCha for infringing its trademark.
ChaCha Search Inc. asserts that it owns the ChaCha trademark in the United States and Europe. The claim was filed in the Indian Southern District Court.
The reason behind the lawsuit is that the new smartphone’s brand is likely to confuse people, who might think the HTC phone and their service is connected. ChaCha already provides mobile phone services with its mobile website and mobile apps for iOS, BlackBerry and Android devices.
HTC launched the ChaCha with the Salsa at Mobile World Congress 2011 in Barcelona. Each phone has a dedicated Facebook button which allows users to share items on Facebook. Bear in mind though, these aren’t official Facebook phones.
The HTC ChaCha features a full QWERTY keyboard and a 2.6 480×320 capacitative touchscreen, with the new version of HTC Sense that is optimised for landscape mode. Running on Android 2.4 Gingerbread, the ChaCha will have a main 5-megapixel camera and a secondary VGA camera.
The Facebook-centric HTC phones are rumoured to arrive on June 17 2011. But will the HTC ChaCha still be called the same? Watch this space.
Which Facebook phone do you like better? Let us know on T3′s Twitter and Facebook feeds, and in the meantime, check out our video of the HTC Salsa.

Facebook denies working with HTC on a mobile phone
Jan 28th

Facebook refuted rumors that it was working with HTC on two new branded phones to be unveiled at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona next month. According to Dan Rose, VP of Partnerships and Platform Marketing, this rumor arose from a manufacturer’s attempt to use the social network’s API in a novel way. He unabashedly denied the circulating rumors by stating, “The rumors around there being something more to this HTC device are overblown.” When asked if there is a Facebook-branded handset, he answered with a very definitive, “No.”
The idea of a Facebook phone has been floating around for a while. Before the recent HTC rumors, manufacturer INQ was rumored to be working with the social network on a handset that would debut on AT&T. Despite these occasional rumors, Facebook continues to deny that it is working on a phone. The social network insists that while it may want to be on a lot of phones, it does not want branded hardware. Rather than its own handset, the social network is supportive of mobile development and is opening its API to a variety of manufacturers and platforms.
Several mobile operating systems have taken advantage of this open API and have tightly integrated the social network into their underlying architecture. Motorola’s Android skin Motoblur and HTC Sense’s UI both offer Facebook integration. Windows Phone 7 also taps into the social network and uses it People’s hub to download status updates into the handset’s address book.

HTC 7 Trophy smartphone
Jan 27th
HTC 7 Trophy review: The HTC 7 Trophy is a Windows Phone 7 smartphone that offers a 3.8in SLCD display and a 5-megapixel camera, but the 8GB of internal memory is disappointing. Review by Ross Catanzariti (PC World Australia (online)) 27/01/2011 13:00:00
The HTC 7 Trophy is one of five smartphones launched in Australia that run Microsoft’s new mobile operating system, Windows Phone 7. The 7 Trophy lacks the unibody aluminium design of the very similar HTC 7 Mozart but has a slightly larger display. It is sold exclusively through Vodafone.
For a full verdict on the Windows Phone 7 platform, read our in-depth Windows Phone 7 review.
Check out our guide to the Best Windows Phone 7 mobiles.
Unlike the handsets that ran the older Windows Mobile operating system, all new Windows Phone 7 smartphones are forced to meet strict hardware requirements. These include a capacitive, multitouch display with a minimum 800×480 resolution, a 1GHz or better processor, at least 256MB of RAM, a minimum of 8GB of internal storage, and a GPS receiver. All Windows Phone 7 devices must also have an accelerometer and digital compass, an ambient light sensor, a 5-megapixel camera or better, an FM radio and seven physical buttons (back, Start, search, camera, power/lock, volume up/down).
These requirements make all Windows Phone 7 devices eerily similar to use. The HTC 7 Trophy attempts to sets itself apart from competitors with a thin design that features an attractive brushed black aluminium bezel, and soft plastic. The 7 Trophy looks similar to both the HTC Desire and the Telstra-exclusive HTC 7 Mozart, but lacks the latter’s unibody aluminium design.
HTC also impresses us with some other nice design touches; the touch sensitive back, home and search keys are responsive and backlit, the physical camera key is raised and provides good tactility, and both the volume and power keys are well positioned and easy to press. Our only complaint is the fact the camera lens protrudes slightly, and doesn’t have a cover.
The HTC 7 Trophy has a 3.8in SLCD capacitive touchscreen, so it’s slightly larger than the iPhone 4 but smaller than the Samsung Galaxy S. The screen has good viewing angles, crisp colour and displays clear text, but it lacks the true vibrancy and wow factor of the Samsung Omnia 7′s 4in Super AMOLED display.
The HTC 7 Trophy comes with “HTC Hub”, providing basic weather information along with a range of HTC apps. The weather hub is complete with overly elaborate screen transitions and is location-based, so it will automatically update as you move. The HTC-developed apps are relatively basic, with attentive phone the most useful; this handy app allows you to activate settings that are standard on many of HTC’s Android smartphones including reducing the ring volume when you pick up the phone, increasing the ring volume while the phone is in your pocket or bag, flipping over the phone to activate the loudspeaker during a call or flipping over the phone to mute the ringer during an incoming call.
The HTC 7 Trophy has a 5-megapixel camera with a single LED flash, and like all Windows Phone 7 devices it can record 720p HD video. The camera produces photos with good colour reproduction and detail for a mobile phone camera, but the settings menu is limited; it only offers scenes, effects, resolution, metering mode, and flicker adjustment. The HTC 7 Trophy includes a disappointing 8GB of internal memory, and there is no microSD card slot for extra storage. Battery life is about what we have come to expect from a smartphone — the HTC 7 Trophy will quickly run out of juice if you use it frequently but should last a full day. For better battery life, we recommend turning off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth when not in use, and keeping the screen brightness down.
