Nokia to delay Microsoft Windows Phone beyond October
Feb 16th
Nokia is not adopting Microsoft’s current Windows Phone 7 platform – which means that there is no chance of any handsets running Microsoft’s software before the end of October. It is likely to be a lot later.
Rather than using the current version of the Windows Phone platform, first released last October, the mobile phone company is going to wait until a major release of the operating system, codenamed “Mango”, is made available this coming October – and that is expected to have a slightly different name from the current Windows Phone 7 name.
Stephen Elop, the former Microsoft executive who since September has been chief executive of Nokia, and announced dramatically last week that Nokia will abandon its market-leading in-house Symbian smartphone platform, has been careful throughout the week to refer to the adoption as Windows Phone – and not Windows Phone 7.
That, coupled with his repeated refusal to offer any timescale for the introduction of handsets running Windows Phone this year, points to a decision to delay the introduction until the newer version of the platform is available.
A Nokia spokesperson said that Nokia has committed to using Windows Phone but would not comment further. Microsoft had not responded to request for comment as this story was being completed.
Though the difference between Windows Phone 7 and Windows Phone may sound trivial, Elop, who previously ran the hugely profitable Office division of Microsoft, will have been keenly aware of the importance of the difference in naming and the need not to be seen at any future date to have misled investors, analysts or customers.
Mary Jo Foley, a ZDNet writer who follows Microsoft closely, previously revealed that Mango will be renamed, possibly to Windows Phone 7.5, with Windows Phone 8 following at the end of 2012. But Mango, which adds a number of new features including HTML5 support, is not due until autumn at the earliest.
However it would have been impossible for Elop to announce last week that Nokia is adopting Windows Phone 7.5 as it would have given away too much about Microsoft’s then-unannounced plans, and the delays implicit in Nokia’s plans.
Yet his refusal to say that Nokia is adopting Windows Phone 7 – a phrase that he has never used in a single one of the dozens of interviews and speeches he has made in the past week – now stands out.
Elop has been briefed on upcoming Microsoft branding efforts. For example, at the announcement last week Elop did not mention Microsoft’s Zune music platform as one of the benefits of the tieup; he said Microsoft has a “great software platform” in Windows Phone, and the brands that mobile consumers want, “such as Bing, Xbox Live, and Office.”
Yet neither Elop nor Ballmer mentioned Zune, Microsoft’s music service that is expected to replace Nokia’s offering in music.
That is because in the past few days, growing evidence suggests Zune is being rebranded and that the name will be dropped. Its logo was noticeably absent from Microsoft’s press materials about the tieup.
A Microsoft spokesperson told ZDNet blogger Mary Jo Foley on Tuesday: “We’re not ‘killing’ any of the Zune services/features in any way. Microsoft remains committed to providing a great music and video experience from Zune on platforms such as Xbox Live, Windows-based PCs, Zune devices and Windows Phone 7, as well as integration with Bing and MSN.”
Elop would have been briefed on whether Zune could be mentioned as a benefit of the Nokia-Microsoft tieup – and noticeably did not.
Analysts have marked down Nokia’s stock in the expectation that it will have significant restructuring costs and that it will have problems selling Symbian phones in the face of growing competition from rivals as it tries to ramp up production of Windows Phone models.
Elop has repeatedly refused to offer any timescales for the introduction of Nokia handsets running Windows Phone, saying only that Nokia expects to ship them “in volume” in 2012 and that he expects to sell 150m more Symbian handsets. At current sales rates, that would see the last Symbian handset sold in mid-2012, though a deceleration in sales is highly likely as consumers and mobile retailers discard the old platform.
On Tuesday he told the Guardian, when challenged on how Nokia could maintain sales if competitors begin to describe Symbian as a dying platform: “Competitors will do whatever they think is right for their business, and, of course, we are going to fight very hard to retain those customers. Note that we have very strong brand equity and we take care of our customers in more countries around the world than anybody else. Our hope is that the good work we do will allow us to defend ourselves against any attacks that may come.”
He declined to say whether Nokia will remain profitable through the year, saying that he had given sufficient financial guidance in a briefing to analysts last Friday – where he noticeably did not guarantee that Nokia will retain quarter-by-quarter profitability this year.

Windows Phone 7 Launch Confirmed For October 11
Oct 4th
Microsoft will be launching its new mobile operating system Windows Phone 7 – set to have a head- on with currently in power Google and Apple ones- on 11th of October. The New York City has been chosen as a stage for the magnificent unveiling. The Worldwide Launch will also bring along it an exclusive array of T-Mobile phones powered by the new OS.
The event at the Microsoft Technology Center will start at 3pm and hold its audiences for an hour and a half experience for an “insider’s look” at the fresh Windows Phone 7 operating system. The super giant in technology has posted invitations for the grand launching at its Events website, msevents.microsoft.com.
The Wall Street Journal in the week gone by, had reported that AT&T is slated to become the “initial exclusive carrier” for Microsoft’s Phone 7 OS. Handsets from Samsung, LG and HTC will be seen hitting the market soon with the new operating system in action.
Microsoft’s Chief Executive, Steve Ballmer is said to be pulling hard for the new entrant’s good fate. According to experts, the Redmond based establishment is expected to splurge an amount close enough to $500 million under the marketing head, for the launching of Windows phone 7 OS.
Additionally, evidences from a SEC filing give an account of how “loss of market share in the company’s mobile phone business” cost Ballmer a considerable amount of his performance bonuses due for the year.
In a recent interview with WSJ, Ballmer acknowledged saying “We’ve got to shoot ahead in a way that’s delightful to users, accessible to developers and prioritize everything else we do around those elements.”
Microsoft to Unveil Windows Phone 7 on October 11
Oct 4th
The long wait for the official launch of Windows Phone 7 devices will finally end this month. As per an event listing at Microsoft website dug up by Endgadget, the official Windows Phone 7 launch event will take place on October 11 at New York based Microsoft Technology Center. At this launch event, representatives of T-Mobile will show Windows Phone 7 based devices.
We had previously reported that AT&T would be exclusively offering Windows Phone 7 based devices from November 8. But now, the official event listing clearly states that T-Mobile would be present at the worldwide launch event of Windows. Of course, T-Mobile would be exclusively showing Windows Phone 7 powered devices. However, no mention of AT&T at the event sounds surprising.
Although we’ve seen quite a number of Windows Phone 7 leaks, we believe that HTC HD7 might be shown at the launch event.
At the launch event, we hope Microsoft will give a timeline of the worldwide availability of Windows Phone 7 devices. Just like everyone, we too are eager to get our hands on the new Windows Phone 7 mobile phone operating system.

Windows Phone 7 reportedly launching on October 10!
Oct 2nd
According to reports, the much-hyped Microsoft Windows Phone 7 mobile operating system will likely be launched on October 10 – with the software giant having planned a launch event in London, and probably even New York City, on the mentioned date.
With the speculations about both the events suggesting that Windows Phone 7 will be unveiled simultaneously in Europe and the US, the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) has reported that Microsoft, along with some help from carrier AT&T, is expected to unveil a line of Windows Phone 7 handsets that will hit AT&T shelves four weeks after the launch.
The WSJ report, citing unnamed `inside’ sources familiar with Microsoft’s plans, said that the Windows Phone 7 smartphones will go on sale during the November 8 week; and Microsoft and AT&T will offer three handsets at launch – one each from Samsung, HTC, and LG.
In the opinion of most analysts, Windows Phone 7 marks Mircosoft’s latest attempt to catch up with Apple iPhone as well as Google’s Android smartphones, after having squandered its market-leading position in only a few years.
Noting that Microsoft is banking heavily on Windows Phone 7, analyst Bryan Keane, of Alpine Mutual Funds, said: “The product can’t be an also-ran that just does everything that is already out in the marketplace. Right now, it isn’t apparent that Windows 7 is better than anything that’s out there, except that it might have a better tie-in to the actual Windows platform.”
Mobile News: Nokia N8 in October, Facebook Free on 3 UK
Sep 29th
Save
The Nokia N8 smart phone would have been an interesting media based handset. The OS itself is the new Symbain^3 operating system –which is supposed to be the Symbian of the new generation of mobile phones. And it is packed with a 12 mega pixel camera, an impressive capacitive touch screen display and even an HDMI output port
However, instead of being released on time last April, the phone was delayed –almost once each month pushing it to the next.
In the end, people lost interest in the handset as new Android smart phones arrived, the iPhone 4 was launched, the BlackBerry OS 6 was introduced and now, the Windows Phone 7 mobile platform is about to be released. Simply put, there really is no love left for Nokia –which is why they should have released the phone on time.
Anyway, despite the last reports that the Nokia N8 would be released by the end of this month or on the first week of October, the new announcement is that the phone will not be available until late in October. With the Nokia N9 (which uses the far more interesting MeeGo operating system) due to be released on the holidays, it seems that the N8 has been doomed to fail before it has even hit the shelves.
In Facebook related news, virtual mobile network operator 3 UK is making use of the fact that they have the largest 3G network in the UK. And now, users under them will be able to access Facebook for free through a special website. This version of the site is able to access the latest updates and other similar content, though images and other media are not available in order to help conserve the bandwidth. According to reports, 0.facebook.com is now available to all users under 3 Mobile UK.

Best Buy Will Give Away Phones Each Friday in October for Mobile Promotion
Sep 29th
Best Buy Inc. (BBY) will give away four types of mobile phones each Friday in October, marking the largest U.S. electronics retailer’s effort to maintain momentum after beating earnings estimates for its most recently completed quarter.
The company will offer one free phone each from carriers Verizon, Sprint, AT&T and T-Mobile every Friday starting Oct. 1, Best Buy said in a statement today. The Samsung Fascinate (Verizon), BlackBerry Curve (Sprint), HTC Aria (AT&T) and Samsung Gravity 3 (T-Mobile) will be the phones offered for free this Friday, said Best Buy, which will require a two-year commitment with the giveaway.
Best Buy hopes the promotions will boost revenue from mobile-phone subscriptions, upgrades and accessories. The company said earlier this month that earnings for the quarter ended Aug. 28 surged 61% as average spending per customer more than offset a decline in consumer traffic.
On each of the Thursdays before the remaining four Fridays of the month, Best Buy will use the Best Buy Mobile Facebook page and Twitter account to announce which phones will be given away.
Best Buy Mobile Launches Free Phone Fridays for October
Sep 28th
Best Buy Mobile sure has a way of enticing smartphone buyers. If the pre-order options, exclusive products and no-mail-in-rebate deals aren’t enough, it’s kicking things up a bit in October. The mega retailer has just announced Free Phone Fridays, a fun alliteration for an even more fun promotion: in the month of October, Best Buy Mobile will be chopping the price of selected phones down to nothing for every Friday during the month.
To get things kicked off on October 1, Best Buy Mobile will be offering the following phones for free with contracts:
- Samsung Fascinate (Verizon)
- BlackBerry Curve (Sprint)
- HTC Aria (AT&T)
- Samsung Gravity 3 (T-Mobile)
Not a bad way to start off the promotion. Best Buy says:
“We are seeing an amazing amount of curiosity and demand for mobile phones right now, especially smart phones, and we want to give consumers another reason to visit Best Buy Mobile in October,” said Scott Anderson, the head of merchandising for Best Buy Mobile. “While we already offer a number of free mobile phone options for our customers every day of the year, launching ‘Free Phone Fridays’ with a great smart phone like the Samsung Fascinate shows that Best Buy Mobile is serious and committed to bringing the best mobile technology and best deals to our customers.”
While the initial selection isn’t all that bad, I’m curious to see which phones will be offered for free for the rest of the month. Best Buy could do well to offer up one of the Droid phones, or perhaps the Captivate on AT&T or maybe even the G2 for T-Mobile.
Before I get too ahead of myself, be sure to check out the full press release on the next page and start marking your calendars!

Nokia N8: Out 3rd Week October
There has been much speculation surrounding the release date of the new Nokia N8 Symbian^3 handset. For those of you who were hoping to get your hands on one of these at the end of September, you may now have to wait until the third week of October. The N8 will consist of some fantastic features such as, 3.5 inch touch screen, 12 mp camera, access to OVI services and Facebook/Twitter apps.
According to Desire at ITProPortal, “Mobiles.co.uk” will now be allowing customers to pre-order the anticipated Nokia N8 with networks O2 and Vodafone being the first two to carry the handset. Indications show that tariffs could range from £10 a month up to £55 a month with the phone initially being free, for as little as £25 per month from Vodafone.
Presently, those of you who enjoy the benefits of O2, prices are yet to be confirmed. But in the ever increasing mobile phone market, they will have to be fairly competitive against the likes of Vodafone, T-Mobile, Orange and so on.
Are you waiting for the arrival of the Nokia N8? What features stand out amongst its competitors? Check out the video below, and tell us what you think? Log onto ITProPortal for more information
