Nokia now offering 24 month warranty on phones
Mar 31st
Nokia Australia will provide a 24 month warranty on all products purchased on or after 31 March, the company announced today.
Previously offering a standard 12 month warranty, the new 24 month manufacturer’s warranty applies to all Nokia products sold in Australia including mobile phones, smartphones and accessories.
“We’re raising the standards in our handset service by offering a level of protection beyond the 12-month norm, said Nokia’s managing director, Chris Carr.” It’s of benefit to our consumers and reinforces the confidence we have in the quality of our products.”
Although Nokia remains a clear market leader in the low end of the mobile phone market, the once-dominant Finnish company has recently struggled to produce a high-end smartphone to rival Apple’s iPhone and Google Android phones. The company announced last month that it would be dumping its Symbian platform and adopting Windows Phone 7 for future smartphone releases.

Kazaa bypasses new App Store regulations by offering mobile site for iOS users
Mar 7th
Sponsored links, if any, appear in green.
Kazaa announced today the availability of a mobile site that allows subscribers of its streaming music services that use iOS devices to access such services simply by visiting kazaa.com in their mobile browsers.
Users can register and pay for the subscription services by entering in a credit card, cell phone number, or home phone bill directly on the website. This allows Kazaa to bypass the new Apple App Store requirements that state in-app subscriptions are subject to Apple getting a 30 percent cut. If Kazaa had released a native application in the App Store, it would be subject to such a fee whenever new customers signed up through the app.
It will be interesting to see if this is successful for Kazaa as there are already a plethora of streaming music services available directly in the App Store and Android Market. The new mobile site is available today at www.kazaa.com. [via TechCrunch]

AT&T offering unlimited calling to mobile phones on other networks
As if we needed more reasons for people to talk on their mobile phones all the time, AT&T is pushing out unlimited mobile-to-mobile calling regardless of network. So talking to your friends who use Verizon Wireless won’t use up your minutes. Best part is folks who already have unlimited calls have an opportunity to save some money.
The big catch with this offer is that it requires an unlimited messaging plan, which tacks on $20 to your monthly bill. If you already do that, then you can sign up for a automatic bonus of Mobile to Any Mobile. However, if you’re on an unlimited calling plan, you might want to think about moving to a cheaper plan.
AT&T’s individual unlimited minutes calling plan costs $70 a month. Their 450 minute plan costs $40. If you talk for fewer than 450 minutes a month to people on landlines, then you can shave up to $30 off your monthly bill by dropping from unlimited minutes to 450 minutes. Even if you did not already have unlimited messaging, adding it only costs $20, which is less than the $30 savings of reducing your voice plan.
Granted, unless you talk and/or text a lot, there’s no big bargain here for you (or me). In fact, I’m sure AT&T is counting on people spending more money by adding or increasing to unlimited messaging. But their heaviest users have a chance to save money on this, so have it Chatty Cathys.

Yelp offering location-based mobile rewards
Nov 24th
Bay Area businesses can offer new rewards to their loyal customers, using a program introduced by Yelp on Tuesday.
The San Francisco reviews website announced that it is giving merchants the ability to reward repeat customers by providing special offers to people who “check in” to their businesses using GPS-enabled mobile phones.
In doing so, Yelp enters an increasingly competitive sector of the location-based advertising market. Facebook, Foursquare and Gowalla are among the companies attempting to link bargains to customers’ physical locations.
More than 1,500 businesses are already participating in Yelp’s program, the company said, including several in San Francisco.
At Phat Philly in the Mission District, customers who check in three times are rewarded with a 1-cent beer. Vicoletto, an Italian restaurant in North Beach, is offering a free glass of wine to frequent visitors.
Cowboys & Angels, a salon on Union Square, offers a free conditioning treatment worth $30 to repeat customers.
Yelp said the program would help businesses promote themselves to a wider audience, as people who search for nearby businesses on the mobile application will be able to see offers close to them.
“We’re excited about check-in offers because it’s a natural extension of what we already do,” said Chantelle Karl, a Yelp spokeswoman. “It’s a neat way to discover different businesses, especially if you’re looking to stretch that dollar, which most of us are.”
The deals are available on Android phones and are expected to come to the iPhone soon.
The move follows Yelp’s introduction in January of check-ins via mobile devices. About 38 million people a month use the company’s services, with 2.6 million people using its mobile applications.
