News Analysis: Will Samsung’s push to healthcare be successful?
Mar 13th
SEOUL, Mar. 13, 2011 (Xinhua News Agency) — “Samsung’s key products could all be obsolete within next 10 years.” — This is the remarks Samsung Group Chairman Lee Kun-hee has made one year ago when he reinstated himself as the group’ head. Lee stepped down after receiving a 3-year suspended jail sentence for tax evasion and breach of trust in 2008.
Lee’s remarks reflect his unique consciousness of crisis, urging his employees to act as if the South Korea’s largest conglomerate was on the verge of extinction. Samsung Electronics, the group’s flagship unit, is dominating the global IT industry as the world’s largest maker of memory chips and flat screens, and the second-biggest manufacturer of mobile phone handsets.
Despite Samsung’s current strong position in the global IT sector, Lee has been immersed in thoughts that Samsung has to find new growth engines in a bid to survive much more severe competition among major multinationals around the globe.
Two months after his management comeback, Lee announced an eye- popping long-term investment plan. Samsung will inject 23.3 trillion won (20.7 billion U.S. dollars) by 2020 into 5 new growth businesses, such as healthcare and renewable energy.
MEDISON, STEP TOWARD MEDICAL EQUIPMENT
As part of its efforts to develop next-generational growth engines, Samsung Electronics purchased a 43.5 percent stake in the South Korea’s top ultrasonic medical equipment maker Medison in February.
Samsung Electronics said Thursday in a regulatory filing that it acquired a controlling stake in Medison and 100 percent of Prosonic, a manufacturer of transducer probes from Consus Asset Management at a purchase price of 331.4 billion won.
The acquisition is an important step toward healthcare industry, one of Samsung’s 5 new growth businesses, including medical equipment, biomedicine, solar cell, vehicle battery and LED. Samsung anticipates it could generate 10 trillion in revenue by 2020 after investing 1.2 trillion won in the medical equipment sector.
Samsung’s Medison acquisition has been regarded as a good entry point into the healthcare equipment industry, analysts said. Samsung will likely create great synergies with Medison by converging its existing IT products and technologies into the medical equipment sector.
“Samsung has been making group-wide efforts to expand into new areas such as healthcare and green energy. Samsung will likely create synergies with Medison by applying its existing technologies to the medical equipment,” an analyst at the local brokerage said by phone.
Samsung beat out strong rivals in the Medison auction such as the country’s tobacco company KT&G and a key conglomerate SK Holdings.

Samsung Galaxy S Wi-Fi: A Replacement For The Ipod Touch?
Posted on 20. Feb, 2011 by Tausif Akram in Cellphone News
It seems that Samsung is taking on the iPod touch with their new device, the Galaxy S WiFi. Samsung introduced this media player at the Mobile World Congress a few days ago. It is expected for both these devices to be released this year. However there is no official word on the release date or the price.
Samsung introduced two Android based media players at the Mobile World Congress, the Samsung Galaxy S Wi-Fi 4.0 and the Samsung Galaxy S Wi-Fi 5.0. Overall, these devices are just like the Galaxy S phones, the only difference being that they do not have cellular phone capabilities.
The Samsung Galaxy S WiFi 4.0 has a 4-inch WVGA Super LCD display. It is powered by a 1GHz Hummingbird processor. It comes with a 3.2 MP rear camera with HD video recording, along with a front facing VGA camera for video calls. The Galaxy S Wi-Fi 4.0 will be available in three versions: 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB. The device runs the Android 2.2 which is upgradable to 2.3.

Coming to the Galaxy S Wi-Fi 5.0, it has a 5-inch TFT LCD touch screen. It is also powered by a 1GHz Hummingbird processor. It has a 5 MP rear camera with HD recording and a front facing VGA camera. The Galaxy S 5.0 will come in two versions: 16GB or 32GB. It also runs on the Android 2.2.
In my opinion, Samsung has taken a step in the right direction. While Android phones have taken over the mobile market, they are not really known for their musical experience and most people do carry an iPod or some other media player with their Android cell phones. With the Samsung Galaxy S WiFi, we can now enjoy great music on the Android platform.

Samsung Galaxy S 2 Leaked ahead on MWC 2011
The team at Mobile fun have been pretty busy of late, by trade they are on online retailer specialising in mobile phone accessories but recently they have been developing a reputation for leaking insider secrets. First they managed to secretly video a mock up of the iPad 2 and now they have tipped the release date of the hotly anticipated Samsung Galaxy S2 Smartphone as the 4th March 2011.
They also say that Samsung’s Galaxy S sequel will cost £549.99 and include 1.2GHz Orion processor and 1GB of Ram to power the latest Android Gingerbread OS. The S2 sports a 4.3″ Super AMOLED Plus screen which uses the regular RGB matrix but with 50% more pixels than Super AMOLED which should result in a far superior picture. In fact Samsung say contrast and use under bright lights and sun light are much better than the already eye watering Nexus S and current Galaxy S smart phones.
Other specs include Bluetooth 3.0 and an 8 Mega Pixel Camera equipped with an LED flash and 1080p video recording which all sounds pretty impressive.
As the Galaxy S 2 will utilise Android Gingerbread it will also come equipped with Near Field Communication (NFC) allowing users to pay for consumer goods or services but swiping their handset instead of their credit cards.
Do you think the S2 will be as popular as the current model?

Samsung Announces 12MP Image Sensors for Mobiles
Feb 11th
Samsung’s research and development on image sensors is yielding results for the mobile phone market. Samsung announced that they have developed 12 MP and 8 MP CMOS sensors for smart phones and other high end phones. The 12 MP sensors are based on 1.12 micron technology whereas the 8 MP sensors are based on 1.4 micron technology. Both the sensors are of the 1/3.2-inch size format which will fit the 8.5 x 8.5 x 6.0 mm dimensions for use on phones.

HD 1080p video recording coming to a phone near you
Samsung claims that the new sensors will offer crisp image quality as well HD video recording at high frame rates. The 12 MP S5K3L1 sensor will be able to shoot 12 MP images at 30 fps and 1080p video at 60 fps as well as 720p videos at 90 fps which is more than what most good digital cameras and camcorders can these days. The sensors will go into mass production soon and samples of the sensors will be available sometime in the third quarter of 2011. The new sensors will also be shown off at MWC 2011 a few days from now as well.

Apple iPhone Loses Ground Globally to Nokia, Samsung, LG

Apple iPhone Loses Ground Globally to Nokia, Samsung, LG Contributed by Danielle Perigoe on Jan. 30
Apple has dipped from 4th place to 5th in terms of number of mobile handsets sold in the last quarter of 2010, according to International Data Corporation’s (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker Report. Chinese mobile phone manufacturer ZTC, which made its mark developing lower cost phones but which has recently moved into the smartphone market, replaced Apple in 4th place, after Nokia, Samsung, and LG Electronics.
But it’s not all bad news for the Apple iPhone as the company experienced the highest year-on-year growth out of any of the top five, at 86.2%. They dramatically increased their market share over the same time period last year, and shipped over 2 million units more than in the previous quarter. The ranking change is down to a similarly strong year for ZTC and their prominence in populous Asian and African markets, while making inroads into European and Latin American countries as well.
Overall the industry had a buoyant 2010, its best year since 2006, with an overall jump of 18.5% over the number of units shipped in 2009, which has been put down to an improved economy as well as an increase in the number of affordable smartphones. Experts predict that demand for smartphones will continue to keep the sector healthy, and world-wide the sub-sector will likely account for up to 50% of all mobile phone sales going forward.

SK Telecom to launch Samsung Bada phone
Jan 24th
The Korea Herald/ SK Telecom, the country’s leading mobile carrier, is expected to launch Samsung Electronics’ Wave 2, which runs on Samsung’s proprietary mobile operating system, in Korea as early as this week.
Wave 2 will be the first model introduced in the local market that runs on Samsung’s mobile operating platform Bada, developed more than a year ago.
“The telecom will make the last call for the launch date, however, there is a high possibility that it will be launched within this month and possibly this week,” a Samsung official said.
Wave 2, which will be equipped with a 3.7-inch super clear liquid-crystal display screen, will feature an integrated social networking service dubbed “Social Hub” and a 5 million pixel camera, according to Samsung officials.
It will also contain a 1 gigahertz Hummingbird central processing unit, a 2 gigabyte embedded memory and a 512 megabyte random access memory, they said.
People can download mobile applications through “Samsung Apps,” which contains applications developed for the company’s Bada platform, its officials said, adding that Samsung is also planning to provide Bada-only application services for Korean consumers.
“We’re completely prepared for the launch of Wave 2 in Korea, considering that Wave 2 has already been released in Europe,” said a Samsung official.
The previous version of Wave 2 was released on the European market ─ including France and Germany ─ for the first time in May last year and the second version was also presented in November.
The launching of the new Bada-powered handset in Korea comes as the world’s second-largest handset maker is gearing up to take over a bigger stake in the mid-range smart phone market.
Shin Jong-kyun, president of the company’s mobile business group, has announced its plans to sell 10 million units of Bada phones by the end of June. He also said Bada phones are expected to make a huge contribution to Samsung’s overall smart phone sales this year.
The global electronics giant has doubled its annual smart phone sales in 2011 to over 50 million units with plans to launch new tablets and mobiles ranging from high-end to low-cost.
A recent research conducted by market researcher Strategy Analytics supports Samsung’s decision by claiming that the global market for mid-range models between US$100 and US$200 is estimated to jump to US$28 billion, or 68 percent of the overall mobile phone market, in 2014, sharply up from US$7 billion in 2010.
